Inside the Murky World of Modelling – An Exposé
Join the Q-Step Centre for a special research seminar marking the retirement of Professor Vernon Gayle FRSE FAcSS, Chair of Sociology and Social Statistics at the University of Edinburgh.
In Inside the Murky World of Modelling – An Exposé, Vernon will reflect on the craft, challenges and occasional mysteries of quantitative social science, drawing on decades of experience working with social statistics and statistical modelling. Expect an engaging and characteristically candid journey into what really happens behind the models we use to understand the social world.
The seminar will also be an opportunity for colleagues, students and friends to celebrate Vernon’s remarkable contribution to sociology, social statistics and quantitative methods at Edinburgh and beyond.
Monday 14 September 2026, 15:00–16:30
Meadows Lecture Theatre, University of Edinburgh
The seminar will be followed by refreshments in the Violet Laidlaw Room.
All are welcome to attend.
No case too well-regressed to crack.
